Is Your Child Eating Too Much Sugar?

It’s common knowledge that sugar isn’t healthy for our bodies. But do we really know how bad it is? It’s been found that a high-sugar diet contributes to cancer, heart disease, ADHD, and diabetes. However, it seems difficult to get away from sugar, as anything delicious seems to contain copious amounts!

It’s especially important to monitor the sugar intake of children. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), kids should only have around 12 grams of sugar a day. This means one single juice box contains twice the allotted daily amount! As a parent, make sure you’re reading the labels on your child’s food and beverage labels.

Signs That Your Child Is Eating Too Much Sugar

Below are a few ways to tell if you need to reevaluate the amount of sugar your kids eat on a daily basis.

  • Your child’s attitude and demeanor can tell you a lot about their diet. For example, if they’re sluggish, moody, and lethargic, this may be the result of a rollercoaster blood sugar level. The constant sugar highs and crashes can cause these symptoms.
  • Your child craves or asks for sugary foods or drinks. Sugar is a very addictive substance and the more you eat, the more you crave. If your child is constantly snacking on sugary foods, this can be a red flag.
  • Sugar is the number one cause of dental cavities! If your child is developing lots of cavities, this can be a sign that their diet is out of control. Even if a child is a diligent brusher, consuming too much sugar will cause cavities no matter what. These sugars will cling to the tooth enamel and begin to wear it away before your child can even have a chance to brush.

If you notice even one of the above signs, it might be time to cut back on the sugar in your household! For more information on the damage sugar can do, or to make an appointment with our skilled pediatric dentist, please contact Great Outdoors Pediatric Dentistry, located in Dover, NH!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience. After going someone where else first that just wanted to pull teeth instead of fixing them we tried here. All the staff and doctor were absolutely wonderful. Came up with a wonderful care plan, my daughter had zero pain or discomfort and he addressed a few issues at once. We fee very comfortable with staff knowledge, explanation and care given. The self pay membership plan was also a huge cost savings as well as we self pay regardless.

Hands down the best experience my 2 year old and I have had yet! It was a breeze talking with Kris to schedule my son’s first dentist appointment. She was so nice and very helpful when I asked her about insurance coverage. She had Gabby in billing call me to answer a couple questions I had.

I was so nervous about my son’s first dentist appointment. He is a VERY active boy who rarely ever sits still.

When we arrived at GOPD, we liked how clean and orderly the general atmosphere was. The front desk staff were so down to earth and nice, it made me feel a lot better. We then met with dental hygienist, Sky, and she was so unbelievably sweet, patient and helpful with my son, showing him all the tools and letting him try them out. Dr. Patrick was amazing as well!

Honestly, I don’t have one bad thing to say. Everyone was so welcoming, nice and knowledgeable! My husband and I were impressed and very grateful to have found such a great place!

It was such a great first experience! Highly recommend!
