When Should Your Child Get Their First Dental X-ray?

Dental X-rays are an important tool for dentists. They help dentists to look at the teeth and gums beneath the surface and check for any problems. But when should your child get their first X-ray? Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Dental X-ray?

A dental X-ray is a picture of the inside of your child’s mouth. It helps the dentist check for cavities, problems with teeth, and other oral health concerns. X-rays can also reveal the condition of the bone structure, gums, and even potential issues like abscesses.

When Should X-rays Be Taken?

The American Dental Association recommends that your child should have their first dental X-ray around the age of 5 or 6. This is typically when permanent teeth start to come in. However, if your child is at risk for dental problems, their dentist may recommend an earlier X-ray.

If your child has difficulty with their teeth, such as pain or discomfort, your dentist may take an X-ray to help diagnose the issue. If the dentist needs to check the growth and alignment of your child’s teeth, X-rays may also be taken.

What Happens During an X-ray?

Dental X-rays are safe and quick. The dentist will place a small film in your child’s mouth, and the X-ray machine will take pictures. The process only takes a few minutes, and the images will help the dentist find any problems early. At many dental clinics in Dover, dental sedation is offered to help your child stay calm and relaxed during the procedure.

At Great Outdoors Pediatric Dentistry, we ensure your child’s dental health is our top priority. If you’re looking for a pediatric dental clinic near me, our team is ready to help. We are also your top choice for Dover sedation.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience. After going someone where else first that just wanted to pull teeth instead of fixing them we tried here. All the staff and doctor were absolutely wonderful. Came up with a wonderful care plan, my daughter had zero pain or discomfort and he addressed a few issues at once. We fee very comfortable with staff knowledge, explanation and care given. The self pay membership plan was also a huge cost savings as well as we self pay regardless.

Hands down the best experience my 2 year old and I have had yet! It was a breeze talking with Kris to schedule my son’s first dentist appointment. She was so nice and very helpful when I asked her about insurance coverage. She had Gabby in billing call me to answer a couple questions I had.

I was so nervous about my son’s first dentist appointment. He is a VERY active boy who rarely ever sits still.

When we arrived at GOPD, we liked how clean and orderly the general atmosphere was. The front desk staff were so down to earth and nice, it made me feel a lot better. We then met with dental hygienist, Sky, and she was so unbelievably sweet, patient and helpful with my son, showing him all the tools and letting him try them out. Dr. Patrick was amazing as well!

Honestly, I don’t have one bad thing to say. Everyone was so welcoming, nice and knowledgeable! My husband and I were impressed and very grateful to have found such a great place!

It was such a great first experience! Highly recommend!
