Is it Possible to Clean Teeth with Braces?

Absolutely, it is possible to clean teeth with braces!

Braces create additional surfaces and spaces where food particles and plaque can accumulate, so it’s essential to pay extra attention to cleaning your teeth properly while you have them.

Here are some ways on how to do it:

Use the Right Tools

  • Soft-Bristled Toothbrush: Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid damaging the braces and your teeth. Consider an orthodontic toothbrush with a V-shaped bristle pattern designed to clean around brackets and wires.
  • Interdental Brush: These small brushes can reach between the wires and brackets, ensuring a more thorough cleaning.
  • Orthodontic Floss: These tools help you floss between wires and brackets, where traditional floss might be challenging to use.

Brushing Technique

  • Angle the Brush: Tilt your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gumline. Brush gently in a circular motion, ensuring you clean around each bracket and wire.
  • Clean Each Tooth: Focus on cleaning each tooth individually. Brush both the top and bottom of the brackets to remove plaque and food particles.

Mouthwash

  • Antibacterial Mouthwash: Rinse your mouth with an antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash to help kill bacteria and strengthen your teeth. This is not recommended for infant teeth.
  • Water Flosser: Consider using a water flosser, which uses a stream of water to remove debris and plaque. It can be effective in cleaning hard-to-reach areas around braces.

Regular Dental Check-ups

  • Schedule Appointments: Continue with your regular dental check-ups, even during orthodontic treatment. Your Rochester pediatric dentist will monitor your oral health and provide professional cleanings. They will even seal teeth as needed.

Note: People with braces are recommended to avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods that can get stuck in their braces and increase the risk of plaque buildup and damage to the brackets and wires.

By following these tips and staying consistent in your oral hygiene routine, you can clean your teeth with braces effectively and keep your mouth healthy and smile bright.
